Sudan International Contact Group Condemns Reported Use of Chemical Weapons by Sudanese Armed Forces

London — 26 May 2025
The Sudan International Contact Group expresses grave alarm over credible reports confirming the use of chemical weapons by the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) in the ongoing conflict. These reports, recently substantiated by the United States and echoed by UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy, represent a deeply troubling escalation in the violence against the people of Sudan.
“The use of chemical weapons is a flagrant violation of international law and a war crime,” said Dr. Nasredeen Abdulbari, speaking on behalf of the Group. “Such atrocities cannot be justified under any circumstances and must be condemned in the strongest possible terms.” For over two years, Sudan’s civilians have endured relentless suffering at the hands of warring factions. The reported use of chemical agents against civilian populations is not only inhumane—it is indefensible.
If the SAF claims to act in the interest of Sudan and its people, it must immediately and unconditionally cease all use of chemical weapons, fully cooperate with independent international investigations, and take urgent measures to protect civilians, as required under international law.
The Sudan International Contact Group calls upon the international community to act swiftly and decisively. In particular, we urge the United Nations, the African Union, and concerned governments worldwide to:
* Launch an immediate and independent investigation into the reported use of chemical weapons;
* Impose targeted sanctions on individuals and entities responsible for these crimes; and
* Mobilize urgent humanitarian support for affected communities.
We also reaffirm that all parties to the conflict—including both the SAF and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF)—must uphold their commitments under the Jeddah Declaration to protect civilians and allow unimpeded humanitarian access.
“The people of Sudan deserve peace, dignity, and justice,” said Dr. Abdulbari. “The world must not remain silent. It must act—now.”
