Press Release For Immediate Release

Sudan International Contact Group SICG Urges Immediate Action to End Widening Conflict in Sudan. The Sudan International Contact Group SICG expresses grave concern over the escalating conflict in Sudan, particularly the alarming spread of violence to Port Sudan.

Since April 2023, Sudan has been plunged into a brutal civil war, primarily between the Sudan Armed Forces SAF and the Rapid Support Forces RSF.
What began as a power struggle has developed into a devastating humanitarian crisis, displacing millions, devastating communities, and pushing the country towards economic and political collapse.

The conflictʼs expansion into new areas, notably Port Sudan, risks destabilising one of the few remaining stable regions. The refusal of the Sudan Armed Forces SAF, alongside its Islamist allies and others, to enter genuine negotiations is at the heart of the widening violence.

Dr. Gony Mustafa Sharif, Deputy Chairman of SICG, said: “The intransigence of the Sudan Armed Forces SAF and its Islamist allies, refusing to negotiate to end the war, has directly led to the dangerous expansion of the conflict into Port Sudan. To prevent the further spread of violence into other regions, the SAF must immediately respect the will of the Sudanese people and take urgent steps to bring this mayhem to an end.” The SICG calls on all international partners to increase pressure on all parties to prioritise peace talks, cease hostilities, and allow for humanitarian access across the country. Only through dialogue and a true commitment to national unity can Sudan begin the long journey toward peace, recovery, and democracy.
